In the midst of the Transformation

The nature of today’s world is overwhelming, filled with pressing social, political, and global issues. Westhope has actively engaged in these conversations by offering educational opportunities, such as a film about Gaza and discussions on deportation. The sheer volume of information can be exhausting, yet the urgency of change is undeniable.
A Time of Great and Difficult Change
Drawing inspiration from columnist David Brooks, we are in a time of great and often difficult change. Cultural shifts occur because individuals change, and as people grow spiritually, so does society. However, the broader picture often seems discouraging, with public immaturity, political strife, and harmful policies dominating the news. In response to these challenges, Westhope is embarking on the "Great 100 Days," spanning from Transfiguration Sunday to Pentecost. This period is an invitation to intentional transformation, aligning with the Spirit’s work of renewal in our lives.
Recognize our Divine Potential
The first key point from Brooks' commentary is that personal transformation is necessary for cultural change. Change is inevitable, but its direction is uncertain. The call of faith is to actively engage in transformation, moving beyond our limited perspectives to embrace the fullness of who we are created to be. Psalm 8 states that humans are made just below the angels, yet we often fail to recognize our divine potential. The season of transformation invites us to partner with the Spirit, cultivating wisdom, patience, and emotional resilience. By doing so, we move toward spiritual maturity, reflecting Christ’s transformation.
Discerning the Balance
We need to discern where God is calling us to change. Transformation benefits not just individuals but also the broader community and world. The biblical stories of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus illustrate a balance between law and prophecy, rigidity and freedom. In the transfiguration, Jesus embodies both, showing the path to wholeness. This season calls for self-examination: where do we find balance? How do we integrate all aspects of ourselves, including our weaknesses, to become whole?
Three Practices
We live in a time of significant global upheaval. Political and societal structures seem unstable, leading to uncertainty and fear. In response, I encourage three practices: staying grounded, maintaining a vision of God’s work, and actively engaging in transformation. Spiritual grounding is essential in turbulent times; practices such as prayer and meditation are not luxuries but necessities for stability. Keeping sight of God’s vision amidst chaos provides clarity and hope. Finally, each person has a role in shaping a better world. Finding one’s passion and actively working for change is crucial in this time of transformation.
Embrace the Journey
As the Great 100 Days unfold, we need to embrace the journey of spiritual renewal. Just as the world changes regardless of our readiness, this season invites personal transformation. What will we allow God to do within us? This time of reflection and action is an opportunity to rediscover our purpose and witness the unfolding of God’s work in our lives.
